The ocean gave birth to life more than 3 billion years ago. Today it still provides 99% of the earth’s living space and accommodates 50-80% of all living creatures. Tiny microscopic marine plants called phytoplankton are the first level in the food chain, and thus provide the backbone for all life. It is clear from these facts alone that the ocean has an array of important functions and sustains much of what we see around us.
Currently, the underwater ecosystem is under grave threat from human activity. Almost every week another story of over fishing is reported and every day thousands of tonnes of waste are dumped into the seas. Global warming has also had a part to play on the ocean’s stability and resources. Although opinions of climate change and the actual affects of human interference are varied and endless, one does not need to be a believer in any one theory to realize that without a healthy and abundant ocean there would be no life. Not only does it support our ecosystems, but it plays a vital role in economy and trade, as well as the sovereignty of its nations. Now more than ever it is important for us to understand the way the ocean works and how we can preserve it. Its fate is not only in the hands of the world’s large companies and governing bodies any more; we, as individuals, have the power to create change. With the right knowledge and resources, we can build a more sustainable future.
